If the pitch of the string is higher than the reference pitch, lower the string just below the reference pitch and then tighten it up to match the tuning track. This is like putting your car in PARK.

When the pitch of your string is higher than the reference note, if you merely lower it to match the reference note and take your hand away, then the string is much more likely to continue to slip down in pitch. So, the last thing you should do is put the string in PARK by tightening it slightly.
